Desmoplastic Mesothelioma
Desmoplastic Mesothelioma is one of many type of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma divided into many types which are benign, pleural, malignant, pericardial, abdominal, and peritoneal. Desmoplastic mesothelioma is a sub type of malignant mesothelioma.
What’s the difference between Desmoplastic Mesothelioma and Mesothelioma itself? Desmoplastic is a medical term for the growth of fibrous or connective tissue. So the difference is that there is a growth of the tissue surrounding the cancer cell.
The cause for the disease is the same as mesothelioma which is exposure to asbestos.
There is also Desmoplastic small-round-cell tumor (DCRCT) which is a aggressive and rare tumor that occur in the abdomen. DCRCT is commonly mistaken with peritoneal mesothelioma, but there is no connection between the two of them.
Desmoplastic malignant mesothelioma is also known as diffuse malignant mesothelioma. In 2000 mesothelioma cases there are 400 of them that are sarcomatoid and from those 70 of them are desmoplastic.
The pattern for this disease is random and irregular and alike to the fibrotic cells associated with other growths associated with asbestos. The connective tissue has unusual cellular which make them hard to diagnose. the malignant cells has a benign fibrous growth that affect the pleura and peritoneum. They are nasty cells that are difficult to treat as chemotherapy doesn’t work too effectively on them.
