Indoor Tanning Health Benefits

Tanning indoor is probably not entirely risk free as there has been study that it can cause cancer. So is it really that bad? Isn’t there is health benefit from tanning beds beside that good tan looks?

Increase production of vitamin D. This is the basic health benefits that we can get from the sun or indoor tanning or so we know. Vitamin D is essential to our body as it contribute to many health benefits. Prevent osteoporosis, increase immune system, prevent osteomalacia, and prevent some form of cancer are some of the Benefits of vitamin D.

However, is it true that indoor tanning can supply you with vitamin D. Yes we all know that exposure to sun ray can stimulate our body to produce some amount of vitamin D, but as far as I know it can only happen with specific sun ray called UVB. The sun ray contain UVA, UVB, and UVC. The UVB is the ray that can cause sunburn and thus it is not used by indoor tanning.

So it is doubtful that indoor tanning would contribute to our vitamin D needs as it only use UVA in their stuff. I think it would be wiser to get your vitamin D needs from a supplement or diet.

There is some people that say indoor tanning can help to treat people with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). However, this needs more study to be proven.
