High Fructose Corn Syrup Health Risks
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS), even though the name sounds very natural it is not a natural product. It is a man made product with corn as its ground ingredient. Many products like soda or ice cream use this as a sugar substitute because it is cheaper and sweeter than sugar.
With one can of soda contain somewhere around 13 teaspoon of HFCS and most people drink two can of soda per day then we are conducting a large scale experiment on HFCS to human race.
It is still in debate whether HFCS can do more harm to us than sugar or not. One thing for sure, that it contain the same risk as sugar cane, the question is whether it contain more risks than sugar or not.
Sugar and HFCS can cause diabetes, obesity, and cavities. The different between those two are how they processed in our body. HFCS component are fructose and glucose. Unlike sugar where our body digest it first, HFCS doesn’t need digestion and its component can be absorbed immediately in our body.
Fructose goes to the liver and can trigger lipogenesis which can cause liver damage called fatty liver.
Glucose goes into our body and since it is a sudden absorbtion the body trigger huge amount of insulin which make us hungrier which lead to weight gain and weight gain lead to diabetes, and heart disease.
Beside those, some also says that it can cause cancer and dementia. These still need more research to make sure. So I think sugar is healthier than HFCS and no sugar is much more healthier than sugar.
In the early days, we only consume 20 teaspoon of sugar per year. Now days, we consume 13440 teaspoon of sugar per year or 36 teaspoon per days.
