Can Sugar Affect Our Moods
Yes. Sugar can affect our moods. It can cause mood swings, depression, meltdown, and even low self-esteem.
Study has found that there are correlation between sugar and depression. So the more sugar you take the more depress you will be. I think it has to do when coming down off of the “sugar high”. So if you just take a lot of sugar, let say a cola, you probably feel good and excited after drinking it, but after awhile when the sugar high comes to an end, you will get a bit depressed for not having the good feeling again.
Beside depression, it can also cause anxiety. With high sugar blood in the system, you would feel that you need to do something, you just can’t stay still. This happen to kids all the time, you gave them something sweet and they go hyperactive. What happen to kids can still happen to us, we just happen to have higher limit to sugar. So a single candy won’t cause anxiety to us, but 10 candy might.
If you want to know more on how sugar affect our moods I recommend you read Little Sugar Addicts: End the Mood Swings. It has great explanation on how it can affect our body. The book it self is meant for mood change in children, but the same principle apply for us.
