Is Dry Ice Dangerous

I remember that I was using my bare hand to handle dry ice couple of weeks ago and I  remember that dry ice is suppose to be dangerous, so how can I be alright? How dangerous is dry ice?

Dry ice is made from carbon dioxide and has the temperature of -109.3°F or -78.5°C. This low temperature can cause frostbite to your body if you touch them long enough. So I was alright when touching those dry ice because I keep juggling the dry ice between my hands and always keep my hand warm. Since it is made from carbon dioxide then it is wise not to breath the gas/air from dry ice.

Think that dry ice is harmless? A radio station in UK hold a contest where the goal is to sit on dry ice and those who can sit the longest period of time is the winner and you know how this end. Four people were hospitalize after having a severe frostbite.

Other hazard that can happen when dealing with dry ice is when you put some dry ice and warm water into a small container like an empty coke bottle with no hole in it to release the pressure out. This will cause a small explosion that could potentially hurt people.
