Many people would say that drinking a lot of water is good for health, it can make you feel full so it would lead to weight loss and also it can make you look younger… or so they say.

But not many people know that you could die because of drinking too much water, that’s right, I said you could die from drinking water…

Just like the incident on January 12, 2007, Jennifer Strange, 28-year old woman and a mother of three from California died after competing in the competition “Hold your wee for a Wii” Contest. She drink about 2 gallon of water without urinating, and hours after the competition she was found dead in her home.

What happen? Water intoxication

Well, when you drink excess water in a short period of time, your blood circulatory system is being diluted with excess water  and thus your electrolyte in the blood would drop so it would balance the electrolyte in the cells and the water would seep into the cells making it to swell. The swelling can make you brain swell and squeeze your brain into your thick skull.

symptoms of water intoxication include confusion, cramping, vomiting or headaches. As the condition progresses, water intoxicated people can collapse and fall into a coma.

So do we need to be careful when drinking water?

Well, don’t worry too much because the case of water intoxication rarely happen and the thing that you should keep in mind is that it’s not because how much you drink but how fast you drink it.

a gallon of water in a day is much better than you drink a litter of water in one minute.
